I can change. It’s my Superpower!

People change or adapt their behavior based on the expectations of their environment.  When you go to the cafeteria at school you are expected to act in a certain way, but when you go to the movies you are expected to act differently. That feels like lots of rules for a lot of different places.

Everywhere we go there are hidden rules that no one talks about.  Everyone is supposed to know how to behave based on the expectations of the environment.  When your behavior is UNexpected you are not adapting or changing to fit the expectations of the new environment.  Sometimes, when you don't adapt to a situation, others will stay away from you because your behavior is unexpected.  It is really important to learn the expected behavior for the environments that are part of your life so that you are accepted and fit in.  We all need some help learning these expected behaviors.  Another term that people use to talk about the learning of skills that are part of expected and unexpected behaviors is called the HIDDEN CURRICULUM.

Did you know that chameleons use a hidden curriculum that is only read and understood by other chameleons?  When a chameleon walks into a new environment he changes or adapts to that environment by changing color, allowing him to “fit in” with the environment.  In the year to come, we will learn a lot about reading our environments and adapting to the changing world around us.  We will be developing our superpower - adapting to change - just like chameleons!

Watch this chameleon adapt to his surroundings

The chameleon adapts to every change calmly and without getting upset.  That is his superpower and it is going to be your superpower too!!!!
